The 44,000 square foot area of the original Pioneer received a 28,000 square foot addition. The first floor will house all engineering labs, while the second floor will be used for faculty offices as well as lecture halls. The college of Science, Engineering, and Technology is located on the second floor.
- Scott L. and Nancy M. Carmona Family Performance Racing Lab (P103)
- 2,000 square foot lab for assembly of engines and FSAE style race cars
- 4ft by 8ft bed plate to set body components or fixtures
- Bed plate is mounted into floor of the facility and is under the crane way
- Room contains a 175 Horsepower engine dynamometer room for students to evaluate the engine performance
Cardinal Formula Racing Team

- There are appx. 25 students per team. (You do not need to be an Engineer Major to be on the team.
- Separate room in the back (has a giant grey door) is the Dyno room. This area can be used to run the engine outside of the car, which is a huge advantage for the team.
- Have previously placed top 10 and top 20 in several categories
- only undergraduate team to place top 10 in the history of the competition
Machine Shop
This area is the hub of the Engineering Department and a huge advance for students. Every engineer student is given the opportunity to learn hands-on and is given real life experience prior to taking the field.
- Space is used to teach classes, by the Formula SAE race team, and senior design groups
- Inside are lathes, mills, and welding machines
- Every mechanical engineering students is required to use the lab, and is taught how to weld, use the lathe, and mill
Campus Foundry
SVSU is one of two universities in the country will the ability to pour metal into molds.
In this facility, students can work with
Open Foundry Day allows any student to visit the facilities, work with other students, and use the equipment.
We work with the Navy to make better steel for the ships
In this facility, students can work with
- 100 pounds of steel
- 50 pounds of aluminum
- can work with any metal that melts under normal atmospheric pressure (almost anything except magnesium and titanium)
- Saginaw Valley State University is one of the ONLY universities in the nation which is allowed to pour metal on campus!
Open Foundry Day allows any student to visit the facilities, work with other students, and use the equipment.
